Restoran AHWA: 'Wok Hei' Hokkien Mee Cooked With Passion In Jalan 222, PJ

This is my childhood restaurant that I frequently visit since I'm 12 years old. Restoran Ahwa is also known as Ahwa Jalan 222 or Hokkien Mee Jalan 222 because it is located at Jalan 222. The restaurant is at the corner shop next to Shell.

TUES - SUN : 4.30 PM - 1.30 AM

This is a family run hawker restaurant where the father son duo is in charge of cooking, the wife taking orders and cashier & the daughters making sure all the customers are well taken care of. The man in charge of the drinks has been a family friend who has been with them for ages too. Some of the stalls selling different food is owned by their extended family as well.

'Wok Hei' is a popular term when it comes to Cantonese cooking. It means food cooked with charcoal over high heat that gives it a complex charred aroma.

Hokkien Mee

The stir fried yellow noodle is cooked with crispy pork lard, pork slices, garlic, cabbage and shrimps. Tasty broth along with dark soy sauce is added to create that rich sauce. It is best paired with their homemade sambal belacan.

Wat Tan Hor

The Hokkien Mee here is famous as you will spot hokkien mee at nearly every table. However, my favourite dish here is Wat Tan Hor (Stir fried flat rice noodles simmered with egg gravy).  The flat noodles is stir fried beforehand with loads of garlic, then simmered with pipping hot egg gravy loaded with generous amount of pork slices, vegetables, shrimps and crispy pork lard.
