6 Days Kyoto Itinerary

Shijo Bridge
Founded in 794, Kyoto was called Heian-kyo (平安京) back in the days. It was later renamed as Kyoto (京都) also means "Capital of City" because the home of the emperor is considered the capital. The Emperor lived in Kyoto from 794 to 1868 and later moved to Tokyo. Hence, Tokyo has become the current capital of Japan.

The Modern Kyoto and Old Kyoto is separated by Shijo Bridge along Kamogawa river. I find it very interesting because once you cross the bridge to Gion, it feels like back to the future of ancient Kyoto. Vice versa walking towards modern Kyoto brings you to the future surrounding with high rise and modernized buildings. To plan your trip ahead, try to categorize places based on:
  1. Modern Kyoto & Old Kyoto
  2. Central Kyoto - Eastern Kyoto - Southern Kyoto - Northern Kyoto - Western Kyoto
